DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to look at the historical, social, economic and cultural development of travel and tourism. Starting with the first urge that Homo Sapiens felt in moving about in search of food, shelter and community. The programme will look at the evolution of the tourism industry and its exponential growth through to its present state.

- A definition of tourism – the social, cultural and economic perspective
- The History of Travel and Tourism – A Chronological Timeline of the development of travel and Tourism.
- Working in tourism – the past (historical from domestics to hotels) ; the present (tourism jobs v careers) and tomorrow (a sustainable socio cultural activity – opportunities for those seeking hospitality and service)
- The role of global, regional, national and local organizations for tourism
- Organizing Tourism – the Integrated Approach to Tourism Planning .
- Transportation and Tourism
- Related Services
- Attractions – Why People Travel.
- Understanding tourists and travellers
- Sustainable Tourism – How it Affects You
- Applying the integrated approach to sustainable tourism planning
- Applying the Tourism Planning Triangle to the Management of Tourism.
- Review of topics in Phase 1
- Seminar - Presentation and assessments of assignment/group work.


Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Learn about the history of travel and tourism through the chronological timeline of its development.
- Follow the progress of jobs and careers from those in domestic service to the present work in the hotel, catering and related services.
- Interpret the role of the global, regional, national and local organizations for tourism.
- Adapt an integrated approach to tourism planning and the role of all the key stakeholders including the local resident.
- Integrate the related services such as, transport and tour guiding with tourism.
- Describe the definition of tourism from a social, cultural and economic perspective.
- Analyze tourist and traveller profiles to destinations.
- Develop sustainable tourism strategies, plans and concepts.
- Create a foundation course for students interested in tourism.
- Introduce the student to tourism and present a clearer interpretation of hospitality and service as essential qualities for a sustainable and responsible socio-cultural activity.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the principles of sustainable tourism to the management of tourism as a socio-cultural activity as well as a socio-economic industry.
- Adopt the Tourism Planning Triangle, the Integrated Approach for tourism planning and a continuous and consistent process of consultation in managing tourism.
- Develop a sense of professionalism to a tourism career instead of a tourism job.
